Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script

When anyone yells “action” on a short drama set, someone has already worked out which story is worth the gamble. Tracking a few hits backward often turns up a book at the start of the pipeline. The novel Shutout by Jami Davenport is the foundation for ReelShort’s Breaking the short max Ice, a 2024 hockey romance revolving around a secret child. Bound by Honor, the mafia arranged-marriage series ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, is drawn from a novel by Cora Reilly. In Korea, the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. With a number of app owners also running reading businesses, source material sits close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio builds the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. If there is no book to adapt, writers rely on proven tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Every scene has to deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to compress a long drama story into such scenes.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

The format’s economics show up on screen at the casting stage. Look through the cast lists for short series on IMDb and the same names keep showing up. Noah Fearnley returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star, after leading ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024. Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, both on GoodShort in 2025, were headlined by Rosa Singerman, who appeared opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. Leads with a following on one app come to the next title with a head start, and that counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles. Studios also cast with a specific viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days

TheWrap says that a Western short drama generally costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is pegged at $150,000 to $250,000. If a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic comes to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Slimmer numbers still have been reported by Chinese producers selling abroad, with Jiuzhou Culture placing a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets, Jiuzhou also said, about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. With dubbing, a studio can repurpose a finished domestic series, meaning the expensive shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Editing Down to 60–100 Seconds

In the editing room, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are sliced from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is built around a question the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next. Piece those fragments together and a 70-episode series adds up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen shows 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return is listed with 100 episodes; episode counts vary widely by title. ReelShort also operates official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, letting the same footage get to viewers who never open the app. In other words, editors cut video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Picking Where the Paywall Falls

Finally comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. TheWrap describes a standard model in which the first eight to ten episodes are free. The free run on ReelShort is usually five to 15 episodes, going by its own blog, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. From then on, episodes are unlocked with coins; ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; otherwise, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. Prices differ by platform, country and promotion, so your store may show something different. Placement is the controversial part, because paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and better avoided.

Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation

With the latest production stage, there is no camera at all. ReelShort’s live-action catalogue is now accompanied by animated motion comics. The Lost Heir, a 58-episode family saga, tracks Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. It should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares the name. DramaWave has gone furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line

Fox Entertainment is the most obvious example of established studios paying attention. In October 2025, Fox picked up an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to making more than 200 vertical titles over two years. In January 2026, Holywater raised a further $22 million in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer signs up to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Quick Glance

Set side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. The fixed, expensive block is the shoot, and much of the rest is arranged around it. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces carry the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall shape the edit. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The typical time and cost at each stage are summarized in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. It says so rather than guessing when no reliable figure has been published.

Stage Typical time / cost What goes on
Source material and scripting No published figure A novel, web fiction or proven trope is turned into a script; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel
Casting No public figure Leads are cast, often actors who already have short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage
The shoot 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame
The edit Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds Footage is cut into installments, each ending on a cliffhanger
